Chandua and Pattachitra

Applique works of Pipili, locally known as Chandua, are beautiful handicrafts with sewn- together clothing. They came into existence in or around the 12th century under the rule of Maharaja Birakshore of Puri, who instructed the locals or artisans to create stitched fabric or clothes to gift Lord Jagannath. This led to the formation of a new genre of artistic culture in the village of Pipili. These days, this lovely skill has taken a significant place in Odisha culture. Without Chandua, worship or sacrificial effort are both deemed meaningless.
